All he needed was some angry husband or boyfriend. The woman sat up. " She brushed the hay from her clothes and began climbing down the ladder, moving slowly and carefully.

She called. She turned to Hannah. " She stood and watched Chris lift his backpack. As he did, he couldn't hide the wince of pain that crossed his face. "You'll need bedding," Phoebe said. " She went into another room and returned with an armful of folded sheets. " He smiled slightly. " They stepped inside. "Matthew's done some work in the kitchen but he doesn't have much time until the winter when he isn't working in the fields. " She walked into it and placed the bedding on the dresser, pleased that the place didn't smell musty from being shut up.

Well, gut-n-owed. " "Someone who knows Jenny stopped by for a visit," Matthew told her as he took off his hat and hung it on a peg near the door. He gestured for Chris to come closer. "Phoebe, this is Chris Matlock. " Phoebe held out her hand and Chris took it. Despite her slight frame, she had a firm grip. Her faded blue eyes were kind but shrewd. She had drawn her gray hair back from a center part and tucked it under the same white cap thing as the other women wore. She also wore a dark gray dress.
