3 million incidents of violence against a current or former spouse, boyfriend, or girlfriend occur annually. 8 According to the Family Violence Prevention Fund, about half of all female victims of intimate violence report an injury of some type, and about 20 percent of them seek medical assistance. 10 In 2007, women were 70 percent of all victims of the 2,340 murders committed by intimate partners;11 other studies report slightly different rates. 12 According to most national studies, African American women are disproportionately represented in the aforementioned data on physical violence against intimate partners.

The notion of a trap of loyalty includes (1) the obligation that Black women feel to buffer their families from the impact of racism in the public sphere; (2) the pressure to live up to the expectation [ 36 ] Male Violence against Black Women that they, as Black women, will be able to withstand abuse and mistreatment more than other members of their households; and (3) an acceptance of the community rhetoric that argues that Black women are in a more privileged position than are African American men (including those who abuse them).

Second, and most important, the racist and homophobic atmosphere that the prosecution created at the trial essentially convicted the assaulted women before the jury reached its verdict. The women’s names were seldom used and when they were, they were mispronounced. There was constant reference to their non-normative gender appearance and how it threatened public safety in New York City. The case resulted in intense media scrutiny and the creation of numerous derogatory titles to describe the women, including “lesbian wolf pack” and “fawl brawl,” and the vast majority of media outlets referred to the assailant as the victim.
